20/02/2026 Dashboard-based Cognitive State Monitoring of Elderly via Smart Home Integrated Gaming Data
The master thesis by Cesar Zapata, and supervised by Bram Steenwinckel and Femke Ongenae, expands on the work from previous studies, presenting an integrated system with two main components:
• A game for the elderly that integrates with smart home devices in order to monitor their cognitive and physical capabilities.
• A dashboard that presents the relevant information to their caregivers and healthcare practitioners.
The game consists of different kinds of questions and tasks, including multiple minigames that are adaptations of neuropsychological tests to a smart home environment. The game connects with the smart devices in HomeLab via the open source OpenHab software and allows for interaction with objects such as lights, cupboards, curtains, fridge, and more.
Both the game and the dashboard have been tested by several external users in HomeLab, resulting in good scores according to the international System Usability Scale (SUS) and Model for Evaluating Educational Games (MEEGA+) standards.
